For several decades, dental implants have been used to replace badly diseased, damaged or missing teeth. Similar to a tooth root, a dental implant is a manufactured anchor for teeth that looks like a screw or a small cylinder.
Made of titanium and other materials, the implant is surgically placed by the dentist beneath the gums in the upper or lower jaw. It is attached to the gum tissue and jawbone and allows the dentist to mount replacement teeth. It is also suitable for maintaining oral hygiene because you don’t have to anchor it to the surrounding teeth or use adhesives to attach it, and it does not come loose like dentures.
Specifications Required for Implants
If you require teeth replacement and are looking into dental implants, you should be aware of the following:
- You must have healthy gums.
- Your bones should be hard and sturdy enough for the implant.
- You might need a bone graft if the bones are too soft or weak.
- You may also require a sinus lift if the sinuses are too close to your jaw or if the bone height is inadequate.
The Process of Teeth Replacement Using Dental Implants
The treatment takes several months and consists of the following three parts:
- Step One
Here, the dentist places the implant somewhat above the top of the bone. To prevent food and other things from entering inside, he inserts a screw into it, secures the gum around it, and covers it. It takes approximately 3 to 6 months for the implant to fuse with the bone. This process is known as osseointegration. - Step Two
After the implant is fused with the bone, the dentist uncovers it and attaches the post, which is an extension. It then takes some time for the gums to heal again around it. Although the usual practice is to place the post and replacement tooth in one procedure, some might require another surgical procedure where the implant is attached to the post. - Step Three
In the final stage, the dentist makes a crown. This is an artificial replacement tooth that has the same shape, size, fit, and colour to ensure it looks like your other teeth. Once it is made, the dentist will anchor it to the implanted post.
Who Can Have a Dental Implant?
People of all ages can use a dental implant, which is the closest thing to a natural tooth. All you require is strong bones and healthy gums. You must also ensure you have proper oral hygiene and maintain regular dental checkups. If a dental implant is something you would be interested in, ask for the opinion of your dentist.
